versity.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=165&proposalid=16426\nA semantic data lay
er is, first and foremost, an architectural construct—a design approa
ch that supports representation, interpretation, and use of data with consi
stent meaning across systems and silos. We’ll begin with the conceptu
al and logical sides of semantic modeling—using ontologies and taxono
mies to formalize meaning, establish shared language, and understand the un
derlying semantic structures of data interoperability.\n\nNext, we’ll
explore four practical implementation patterns: a Metadata-Only Semantic L
ayer, a Graph-Based Semantic Layer, a Federation/Virtualization Semantic La
yer, and an API-/Contract-Based Semantic Layer. You’ll see how these
patterns can stand alone or be combined in hybrid designs. We’ll also
look at the implementation of multiple semantic layers serving different p
urposes in a single data management architecture.\n\nThroughout the session
, we’ll stay centered on architecture—how semantic layers fit i
nto modern data management and how to design them as flexible, evolving com
ponents that are sustainable over time.\n\nYou will learn to:\n\n
Understand the architectural roles and purposes of a semantic data layer\n
Model ontologies and taxonomies to design semantic meaning and structures\n
Understand four primary implementation patterns and their design considerat
ions\n
Identify where and how semantic layers fit into enterprise data architectur
e\n
Apply principles of data semantics to support interoperability and shared m
eaning\n
